Prof. Abdon Atangana, a professor of applied mathematics at the University of the Free State (UFS), was given the
first TWAS-Mohammad A. Hamdan Award by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in December 2020. The new
award is named after the esteemed mathematician who served as TWAS Vice President for the Arab Region until his
death in February 2020. The award comes with a ‘purse’ of US$5 000, and will be given every two years for outstanding
work in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, probability or statistics by a scientist working and living in
the Africa or Arab regions.
